I might need to get a better PSU for all of this (my current one is a 550w). Also I'm not sure about the GTX 280, might get something else.

Also, I want to get Vista Ultimate 64-bit, but will 64-bit work with the CPU I picked? Or will it only work with the AMD Athlon 64 bla bla CPUs

I never said don't get it because of an FPS drop, it was just buggy for me, probably because my PC fucked up and I couldn't install SP1 no matter what I tried. (I'm thinking the failed Ubuntu/Vista dual boot was what kept me from installing SP1)

I mainly want Vista for DX10. Yeah yeah yeah it's not a huge jump from DX9 but whatever.

Alright.

1. For the GTX 280, I'd recommend a 700w+ PSU. They suck LOTS OF POWER. Especially if you're overclocking.

2. Good Mobo.

3. Good RAM/CPU/.

4. I'm pretty sure any Intel/AMD processors will run 64-bit OSes, but I'm not sure how well they'll run them. Also, most applications are not 64-bit compatible. (Just informing you.)

5. Important : IF YOU ARE NOT AN OVERCLOCKER, EXTREME GAMER, OR HARDWARE ENTHUSIAST, DO NOT INVEST IN A GTX 280. (Really expensive. REALLY. Try like, ATIs new RV770s or the GeForce 8/9 series.)

That's a good build.

I'm aware that not everything is compatible with 64-bit right now, but I want to be as future-proof as possible. Most of the software I used before my PC died was compatible with 64-bit anyway.

Yeah, I was thinking I'd probably have to get a new PSU, also I don't plan on overclocking.

Why not? I've seen E84/500s w/ that mobo + some LN2 do like, 600FSB, LOL. (Over 6Ghz on dual cores, LOL.)

I'd imagine the Q6600 would do well on that board. Anyways, alright. ;)

I have Ultimate 64bit, and that CPU, both work fine together.

The only problem I've had with 64bit is Zone Alarm doesn't make products for it (Firewall program), other than that no problems.

ONLY get Vista if you have AT LEAST 3 GB. If you do get it, it's awsome.

I would rate your cp there at about 8/10 price and performance wise.

I've decided to go with the 9800 GX2 (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814130338) because the GTX 280 really sucks in a price vs. performance sense.

64 bit isn't restricted to brand of CPU, almsot all processors support it now. The probly with 64bit is the lack of software support. Problems can be generated if it isn't prepared for 64bit (ie: poorly coded) and last time I had Vista 64bit installed I had a lot of BSODs so I've steered clear from it. I'm sure with the new service pack they have decreased these issues and if you went 32bit you would only have 3GB of the 4GB for use (with a 1GB Video card), which you wouldn't want that. One important fact is, that you've decided to get a Q6600 instead of the Q9450. Keep in mind the Q6600 is not a true Quadcore but infact a double dualcore. (For OCing, sure the Multiplier is 8x, but the cache is much larger than the Q6600 and the most you could possible get is 100mhz, maybe 200mhz difference but with better performance regardless.)

Got my PC parts yesterday and am in the process of installing all my games and shit. It's really fast and Vista Ultimate x64 works fine. Haven't run into any compatibility problems yet. (X-Wing 95 refuses to install though :( but that's a fucking ancient game)

The DDR2 1066 RAM I was going to order went out of stock like two minutes before I was going to order, so I got some good DDR2 800 RAM that I'm going to overclock.
