I recently got a Dell Computer that runs Windows XP (fairly old) for free. I've decided to use it as a game server, as I don't have use for it besides that. It probably won't be the best server, but I'm sure it will work.

Anyways, I was wondering, would it be better to run a Source server on Linux or Windows XP?

Help would be appreciated.

Depends which you are most used to, Probably XP, Doesnt really make that much different as your just doing a source server.

If it was a remote dedicated server it would make a difference

Yeah, Linux is more stable for a webs server. Although, not sure about a source game... gmod or anything like that. Probably windows would be the best.

Windows cause its not a real demanding server since its only source

Linux is more ideal for server hosting, even for source due to the fact it cuts out the bullcrap and does what you tell it to. However, linux cannot run Gmod servers. At all. So if you want to run gmod servers, you want windows server 2003.

What sort of internet connection do you have?

What sort of internet connection do you have?

2 MB download speed (at maximum)

500KB upload speed (at maximum)

Generally my relative with a good computer can get 800KB download speed, however, my computer only gets around 200-300KB download speed (old computer).

I'm sharing the server with my relative, so we'll have to come to a consensus about what we're going to run on it. Most likely either Gmod or CS:S Surf.

You do realise you'll
1 Not be able to play on your own server without a ping of >200-300
2 Only be able to have a max slots of like 10, otherwise everyone will lag

Running your own server is pretty annoying,

No, it doesn't work correctly. Those that try it run into a pleothora of problems. Also, server hosting via wine is even worse than windows. If there was a linux option, I would be using it.

Also with that upload speed the max players will only be 1, and I doubt it will be anyone other than you.

He can host around 10 people no problem, let me find the maths for it.

Really? My relative has run his own minecraft server before and gotten around 0 ping. Do Source Servers cause problems?

Also, yes I realize that I will only be able to have around 10 players.

Well, anyone else have trouble like that? I've never heard of that problem, and I had a friend in an old CS:S clan that ran a dedicated server on his computer and didn't have any trouble playing.

Also, would anyone happen to have a list of all Garry's Mod console commands?
