I tried to get onto one of my friends tribes and I typed in what I do every time "/join whatever" (not the actual tribe name) and it wont connect or join me into the tribe.....

I think i need sexual healing.....
gms_jointribe name password should work.

If he hasn't posted back then most likely it did.
/jointribe "name" "password" (With the quotes) Works for me if you dont feel like using console. :<
